Window treatments are one of those things you only notice when they look bad. The good news: a little seasonal attention keeps shades, shutters, blinds and awnings in like-new condition for years.
Dust on a Schedule, Not on Demand
Desert dust settles on every horizontal surface, including slats, shades and shutter louvers. A quick pass with a microfiber cloth or vacuum brush attachment once a month prevents the baked-on layer that is much harder to remove later. Work top to bottom so you are not cleaning the same slat twice.

Fabric Shades and Awnings
For roller shades, cellular shades and drapery, a low suction vacuum with a brush attachment handles routine dust. Performance outdoor fabrics, including Sunbrella, can be rinsed with a hose and mild soap and left to air dry. Always let awning fabric dry completely before retracting it, since moisture folded into a roll can cause mildew stains.
Shutters, Blinds and Hardware
Wood and composite shutters just need a damp cloth, never harsh chemicals. Check that cords, chains and wands move smoothly and that mounting brackets have not loosened, especially on windows you open frequently. Catching a loose bracket early prevents damage to the headrail.

Watch the Moving Parts Outdoors
Monsoon season is when awning arms, shade tracks and motorized systems earn their keep. Rinse tracks after dust storms, listen for anything grinding or straining in a motor, and retract awnings in high wind. When something does not feel right, our shade repair service can look at it before a small adjustment becomes a big repair.
